چکیده

The data from five strong-motion accelerograph stations centered above and surrounding the fault are used to develop an approximate three-dimensiunal dislocation model for the San Fernando earthquake. In the resulting model, the dislocation originates near the instrumentally determined epicenter at a depth of 9.2 km and then propagates southward and upward with a velocity of 2 kin/see. Calculated dislocation amplitudes of about 10 m in the hypucentral region have been found to decay to about 1 m toward the center of the fault and then build up again to about 6 m just before the fault intersects the ground surface in the San Fernando Valley. The assumed fault area of 130 km 2 and the assumed rigidity p = 3 × 1011 dyne/cm 2 give a moment M o = 1.53 × 1026 dyne-cm. This study indicates that, with several strong-motion accelerographs suitably located in the epicentrai region, it is possible to find a kinematic faulting process associated with the periods of ground motion which are longer than about I sec.

THE SOURCE PARAMETERS OF THE SAN FERNANDO EARTHQUAKE INFERRED FROM TELESEISMIC BODY WAVES BY MAX WYss AND THOMAS

The accuracy of teleseismic estimates of moment, fault area, dislocation and stress drop was tested for the case of a thrust fault: the San Fernando, California, earthquake of Feburary 9, 1971. On the basis of P-wave spectra of 25 stations and S-wave spectra of 9 stations, the respective values were found to be 0.7.1026 dyne-cm, 570 km 2, 45 cm, and 14 bars. They agree well with the same parame...

A multi-lined behavior simulation approach for liquefaction of earth-dam

A few of the presented soil behavior models are capable of predicting the triggering and post liquefaction and also shear band mechanism through the soil media. The assessment of earth-dam body behavior as a soil structure made of cohesive soil in core and non-cohesive soil as the core supports, including water interaction at upstream through earthquake upon a multi-line constitutive equations ...

Generalized Ray Models of the San Fernando Earthquake

The exact Cagniard-de Hoop solut ions for a point dislocation in half-space are used to construct models of the strong ground motion observed during the February 9, 1971 San Fernando earthquake (PC, = 6.4). By summing point dislocations distr ibuted over the fault plane, three-dimensional models of a f inite fault located in a half-space are constructed to study the ground motions observed at J...

A Dynamic Analysis of the Interaction of Concrete Face and Rockfill Part in Concrete Faced Rockfill Dams

Introduction Concrete faced rockfill dams have been considered in recent years more than other types of dams due to their low dependency on the bed and the shape of the valley, as well as the simpler construction technology. In this regard, rockfill dams are a suitable substitute for embankment dams because of higher stability of the body and the availability of rock aggregates. On the other h...

M 7.0 earthquake recurrence on the San Andreas fault from a stress renewal model

[1] Forecasting M 7.0 San Andreas fault earthquakes requires an assessment of their expected frequency. I used a three-dimensional finite element model of California to calculate volumetric static stress drops from scenario M 7.0 earthquakes on three San Andreas fault sections. The ratio of stress drop to tectonic stressing rate derived from geodetic displacements yielded recovery times at poin...
